For every e-bike, we check and document the battery condition in the condition report. Most of the bikes we have are recently returned lease bikes with few charge cycles—the battery is usually in very good condition. If the conditions is below our standard, the battery is replaced.

A rough rule of thumb: For forest trails, your tires should be at least 42 mm wide.

The wider your tires are, the better you’ll ride on uneven forest trails with roots and gravel. That’s because you’ll get more traction on loose surfaces, better control over roots and rocks, and a more comfortable ride thanks to lower tire pressure. However, wide tires also mean you’ll have a harder time making headway on asphalt.

Another important point: Bikes have forks of varying widths. So be sure to check which tire width actually fits your bike’s fork.

Here’s what you should check:

What mounting points (mounts) does the bike frame have? Pay particular attention to the area around the dropouts near the wheel axles, the seat stays, and the fork crown. You can also check the specifications provided by some manufacturers. Terms like “rack mounts,” “fender mount,” “mudguard compatible,” or “carrier compatible” are often used here.

You should be especially careful with gravel bikes that have carbon frames. Special guidelines sometimes apply here regarding what can be attached to the frame and how.

You should also make sure that the retrofitted parts are the right size for the components already installed, so that, for example, the fenders don’t rub against the extra-wide tires.
